An Easy Way to Determine the Default Router IP Address

There are a few well-known router manufacturers which make it possible for everyone to have its own wireless connection. In the router package there is normally a setup CD which makes it easy to set up the router for the first time and a well-documented user’s manual. If for any reason you don’t have the setup CD or it won’t work you can still setup the router easily by accessing the router’s web based utility. One of the several IP addresses used to login to the router’s web based utility is and we are going to use it as an example in this article. Of course, you can easily check whether this is your router IP. There are several ways to do this:

  • Type in the browser’s URL bar (this will only tell you whether this IP is the right one. If it isn’t use the next methods.)
  • Check the user’s manual
  • Check the router and find a sticker with the login details on it
  • Use the Command Prompt in Windows (the easy, yet geeky way to find the default router IP)
  • Use the Control Panel

When you login take a close look at the menu

In case you can’t find the default username and password for the router you own, you can always search for it online. The main reason why anyone would like to modify the router settings is to secure its wireless network. Things like changing the network name or the default router IP, as well as changing the default login details and protecting the wireless network with a strong password, are all small steps which make your network more and more secure.

All these options can be easily found in the router settings menu and modified according to the user’s needs. To do this, start your browser and type the default IP in the URL bar. After that a new window will appear asking you to enter the default username and password. Please note that the serial number in some routers is the default password you should use to login to it. If the login details are correct you will be granted access to the router settings page where you can easily modify its settings. Whenever you make some changes don’t forget to save them. At the same time if you are changing the default IP or the wireless password you will be logged out once you save the settings. Just login again and confirm that everything is working fine.

Changing the default login details

If you know the default login details of your router you can login with no problems. However, if you don’t have them you can find the default login details online. All you have to do is to type the router model and password and you will see lots of available login combinations. However, if nothing works, you will have to reset the router to factory settings and try the default login details again.

However, there is one thing you should keep in mind. When you reset the router to factory settings all the changes you have made before will be lost. This means that you will have to change the network name as before, set up a new wireless password and so on. Additionally, all the devices which were connected to the network will have to be checked and reconnected to the wireless network with the new password.

Although you may think this is a huge problem, it is always better to spend some time and secure your network than to allow some “wannabe hacker” gain access to your network and mess everything up. The first process will definitely take much less time and the stress levels will be normal. On the other hand, when you notice that someone has changed your wireless password or network name, and you can’t login to the router because the default login details have been changed by someone you will lose much more time to configure everything back and you will be under stress all the time. So, take your time and start securing your own network today.
